Dr. Lisa Bourque-Bearskin is from Beaver Lake Cree Nation, a passionate and esteemed Cree Métis nursing leader, researcher, and Associate Professor. As British Columbia’s first CIHR Indigenous Research Chair in Nursing, Lisa will advance Indigenous wellness by reconciling parallel pathways in Indigenous Health Nursing. Recipient of the NNPBC Excellence in Advancing Nursing Knowledge and Research Award, Lisa has been mentoring nurses and communities leading innovating wise practices for nursing education, research, policy, and praxis. Former president of the Canadian Indigenous Nursing Association, Lisa’s nursing leadership and research reputation is respected locally, nationally, and internationally in her commitment to advancing Indigenous self-determination using rights-based and strength-based research approaches stemming from critical perspectives that embrace alternative ways of knowing.

Workshop details:
Purpose: To share ideas on Indigenous nursing research scholarship in the ongoing development of Indigenous Health Nursing (IHN) as a professional practice. To uphold a rights-based approach to complement the role and efforts of Indigenous community-based health services and programs in BC. Background: Access to health care as a human right is a global concern. Health care systems values, beliefs, and practices of professional health knowledge continues to deny and/or obscure the complex and direct relationships of Indigenous nursing knowledge to Indigenous wellness. Nurses are pivotal in providing culturally safe and secure health care for Indigenous peoples. The Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action prioritized increasing the number of Indigenous health professionals and programs to improve Indigenous health. Indigenous Health Nursing (IHN) is an integral component of Indigenous healthcare. The first inaugural meeting was to take place last March just before COVID 19 changed our lives and how we will work together. Research Goals: This funded research chair program will support the training and mentorship of youth, community leaders, undergraduate and graduate students, nurses and other health professionals interested in IHN.
